Discover Northern Chios
Volissos and Agia Markella
It is a winding road but beautiful drive through the mountains to the picturesque village of Volissos on the western part of the island. The name is so ancient that Homer has been associated with it. It is also the origin of the Ariousios wine, aka God’s nectar, that you can learn about at the Konaki Archaeological Museum… or taste its modern-day version at the Ariousios winery! The Byzantine castle of Volissos dates from the 11th century and is an easy hike that is especially enjoyable at sunset. On a warm summer day, you may wish to drive to Agia Markella first, where you can visit the monastery of the patron saint of Chios, swim in the cold waters of the stunning beach, and enjoy the seafood at the namesake taverna.
Oinousses Island
From Lagkada, it is a 20-minute taxi boat ride to the island of the seafarers, another picturesque powerhouse of global shipping with strong nautical traditions, which you can explore at the Nautical Museum of the island. The collection includes models of ships used during the Napoleonic wars, nautical instruments, and paintings. Walk around to explore the island, dip in its quiet, secluded beaches, and enjoy its fresh seafood. You may also visit Isihastirio Evangelismou, the Byzantine-style monastery with its renowned frescos by Fotis Kontoglou, or enjoy the view from the nearby chapel of Prophet Elias.
Mount Pelinaio
With its highest peak at 1,297 m, Mount Pelinaio is one of the highest mountains in the Aegean. No wonder Zeus was worshipped here, but did you know that this is also where Artemis and Orion competed in hunting? According to Greek mythology, the goddess of hunting was so impressed with Orion’s skills that she parted the mountain to create a second peak in his honor. The easiest way to the top starts from the village of Spartounta and is a 5.4 km hike (one-way), with an elevation of 753 m. If you are interested in hiking in Chios, explore the map below
Beyond Northern Chios
We may be passionate about the unexplored and mysterious Northern Chios, but do not leave the island before also visiting: Avgonyma at sunset, Mavra Volia beach, the Mastic Museum, the Chios town castle, the orchard mansions of the Genoese in Kampos, the UNESCO-World Heritage Nea Moni monastery, the Mastic villages of Pyrgi and Mesta… And if it is a lot of ground to cover this time, we would love to welcome you back!
Agiasmata Thermae
The hot springs (thermae) of Agiasmata are a unique destination for a spa day with therapeutic qualities, as its mineral water is especially beneficial for those suffering from sports injuries, skin conditions, or rheumatoid arthritis. It is open from July to October, and on windy days, the mist of the seawater crushing on the shore makes for an inhaling therapy that boosts the immune system too! Before you make your way back, do not miss a stop at the namesake taverna. And if you still have energy, coupled with water and sturdy shoes, make the loop via Pitious to also visit Palaia Potamia, a deserted village that used to be a hideout from pirates.
